HDRL

There has been much talk about the new HDRL feature for gaming. The first game engine to implement this is the engine which powers Valve Corporation's newest and greatest game, HL2. The engine is known as either "Source" or "Havoc 2". Through the online program known as "Steam" Valve plans on updating the source engine with this new feature around the transition from the 2nd to 3rd quarter of this year.

What do you think the final outcome of HDRL will be?

The transition from light to dark are most definately not the big feature to HDRL. Infact, that was just an added feature. All video games currently have a static light system. There is a single light source in outside areas that always shines. In most cases it is the sun. It must be scripted in the game which way the shadows of everything in the maps face. Now, with HDRL, a light source can be placed anywhere on the map and anything with mass in the video game will shadow in a realistic way. It won't just be physix objects that shadow anymore. It'll be everything in the map. It adds a great deal of realism to the levels. What's even ko0ler than that is when you have this technology applied to water or glass objects in the level. It simple looks amazing. A specific level in HL2 is being added entitled "The Lost Coast". What can be seen from a newly released techdemo is that part of this level takes place in a church with stained glass windows. There is also a great deal of water; thus the name 'coast'. When you add great detail in shadowing and reflections in an already fast-paced first person shooter; It adds never before seen realism that does not seemingly hinder gameplay. I see a great and progressive future for HDRL technology. Perhaps this added level in HL2 will change your mind once released.

Honestly, after seeing HDRL, I think that they could have made it better.
Take the muzzle flashes from, say, the AR2 pulse rifle, how come HDRL doesn't werk there? Or the POS flashlight that you get?
